My name is Mills Baker, and this is where I post what strikes me. I write about love, religion, music, memory, art, culture, media, suffering, and the utterly random.

Tom Waits - Come On Up to the House

I have long hoped to open either a serious rehab hospital or an out-and-out insane asylum (though I gather we won’t call it that) situated at the top of a hill and aggressively market its services to a world full of needy and unstable people using this song.

Possible asylum slogans: “Come down off the cross; we can use the wood,” “Doesn’t life seem nasty, brutish, and short?” and “The world is not your home; you’re just passing through.”

This will be, appropriately, an old-school asylum. If you’ve seen Tom Waits in Dracula, I expect there will be a lot of that sort of activity.
