Doree posted a photo of a dog without front legs a while ago and it reminded me of Shep, the dog above, about whom I read in “A Thousand Hounds.” I finally found the book tonight.
Omaha, NE, March 1930: “Shep” walks only on his hind legs. He belongs to the Rattigans. Shep saved his life by chewing off both front legs when he walked into a wolf trap. He taught himself to walk upright and now gets along quite well. The Humane Society, however, believes the dog should be shot. The Rattigans are refusing. They regard the dog as family and are more attached than ever in view of his courage and spunk.
